Do I need a permit to carry a concealed handgun in Louisiana?
Since July 4, 2024, Louisiana law allows a person 18 or older who is not prohibited from possessing a firearm to carry a concealed handgun in Louisiana without a permit. Restricted locations and other rules still apply. This is general information, not legal advice.
If permitless carry is legal, why get a permit?
A Louisiana permit can be honored in other states that have reciprocity with Louisiana; permitless carry does not extend outside Louisiana. See the Louisiana State Police reciprocity list for current states. The training itself also covers Louisiana use-of-force law and safe handling.
How old do I have to be to get a Louisiana concealed handgun permit?
21 or older, under La. R.S. 40:1379.3(C).
What training does Louisiana require for a permit?
An approved course of at least nine hours, including deadly force and conflict resolution, child access prevention, and a 36-round live-fire qualification. See the course page for details. Other qualifying options exist (for example, certain military small-arms training); see La. R.S. 40:1379.3(D).
How recent does my training need to be?
For most course-based options, within the twelve months before you apply.
Does your course issue the permit?
No. We provide a certificate of completion. You apply to the Louisiana State Police, which determines eligibility and issues permits.
Do I need my own handgun?
Not for the in-person permit course. Instructor pistols are available to try. You will need at least 36 rounds of ammunition for the pistol you qualify with.

At least 36 rounds.
I'm a veteran. Do I pay State Police permit fees?
Under La. R.S. 40:1379.3(W), honorably discharged veterans are exempt from the fees for the five-year or lifetime permit. (This refers to State Police fees, not course tuition.)
I have a lifetime permit. Do I need more training?
Yes. Lifetime permit holders must provide proof of refresher training every five years. Our CHP Renewal course is designed for this.
